Talk:Education
I edited the bit about self worth to explain how it can get tied to performance in mainstream education.Roseapprentice (talk) 17:22, 10 September 2014 (EDT)
Hierarchy of ordering of motivations
I still have uncertainty about the section on hierarchy of motivations, but I'm not sure how to edit it in order to include my views on it. I'm not sure that I like the idea of having a hierarchy in the first place, because I think some motivations can be just as good as others, but I think the point that's important about it is that intrinsic motivation, in whatever form it takes, is better than motivation by imposed rewards, punishments, or coercion.
I think the first 2 points, about natural curiosity and knowledge of how information is useful, have a lot of overlap and interaction, and one isn't necessarily better than the other. I think there is a distinction, though, between when information is directly evidently useful while someone is learning it, and when someone can only see how the information is useful because it's a building block for something else that they have a more direct desire to learn. I think direct understanding of how information is useful is just as good of a motivator, and maybe better in some cases, than natural curiosity.
